This looks like "your" bug.

There's nothing stopping you maintaining /etc/X11/xorg.conf in Ubuntu.
It just tries to do stuff automagically these days, but you can
override that with your own settings.

gtf is a useful tool for generating modelines that you stuff into
xorg.conf... If that bug report is to be believed then the native
resolution is 1280x800.
