one could always install linux in the windows partition, using the umsdos filesystem, which maps linux filenames onto dos filenames. Thus, someone wanting to give it a whirl might not actually need to repartition.

Although, I should add, I've never actually tried it and I'm not sure if recent Linux distros offer it as a standard option.
