[edlug] Stallman's talk - kernel history
Can someone enlighten me on the history of the GNU
kernel: what were the reasons they went with a
microkernel rather than copying a monolithic Unix
kernel? It seems odd to me when, otherwise, Stallman
made the GNU approach appear (to me) surprisingly
pragmatic in terms of his consciously deciding to use
using Unix as a model because it had a user base and
was the best of the available options and,
particularly, embracing the X Window system despite
reservations about its license. Did the Mach kernel
look ready for prime time but then prove to require a
lot of work to be usable? Did their kernel development
stall with the emergence of the Linux kernel?
