The problem is that they want to *try* Linux but,
unless they have a spare machine, preserve their
existing Windows install. Thus Linux has to play nice
with Windows, whereas Windows doesn't care about
playing nice with Linux. There's not a level playing
field. The alternative would be a Linux install that
just nuked whatever existed on the disc, closer to
'just works' but then people would be less inclined to
try it.
