Do yourself a BIG favour and get an ADSL router.  USB modems are TRASH.
Plug in phoneline on one side, run CAT5 cable from the other side
to your box (you'll need an ethernet card if it doesn't have it
already, or on the mobo).
Configure router through web interface.
Set router's LAN-side IP address as gateway address for your LAN.
Enjoy high speed connectivity.
No mucking about with drivers or kernel required, unless you have weird
ethernet chips on your mobo (in which case spend a tenner on a decent
card).
