I have an Alcatel/Thompson/Speedtouch 330 DSL USB 'ISDN' modem.
I use PPPoA with VPI/VCI 0/38 (BT) to connect.

I got Mandrake 8.0, then 9.2 and now 10.0 (Community) over the last year 
to try and
get this thing to actually connect to the internet.

I have to use my 56K dialup if using Linux to go on the www, which I 
want to do
lots.  I want broadband linux.

I have read and followed (afaik) every FAQ I can find.  I have the 
sourceforge drivers, I have the latest firmware, I have tried using a 
non-SMP Kernel (I got a Dual AMDK7D Athlon MP box).
Tried with/without APM/APIC support in bios/ kernel (both, either, none). 


I have reinstalled.  I have re-reinstalled the pppoe/a RPM's, the 
speedtouch RPM and
also RPMS' about 'dsl modems' and anything similar.  I have set up every 
setting I can find
manually and automatically (using scritps and also X based utilities 
etc.) I know my DNS
numbers.  I have Fedora, tried that, no luck still.  Tried 2.4 kernels 
and 2.6 kernels.  Made sure
I had patched ATM kernels.  Is shows up on the proc/usb. Harddrake lists 
it as a device
on the USB bus but cant do fek else with it. ManDrake Control Centre and 
Kde show it
as a sort of "?" device on the USB chain.

I'm either missing something really obvious or it's never going to 
work.   My brother got Smoothwall working in about 2 weeks but he's got 
a cablemodem (ethernet).  I cant find anyone
who says: I have a 330 Speedtouch.  Here is my settings: blah blah.

Nor anyone who says: Here is the correct sequence to install these 
components / RPM's and
here are the settings etc.

This has been £$%&ing me way off for about 6 months.  If I was paid by 
the hour to muck about
with this I be very rich.  I do need to sleep, not to mess around with 
"ifup ppp0" and runmodem
and and and .....

Tether, end of.  I have 160 viruses in quarantine on XP, it's a security 
risk.  I got Netsky'd
and also Gaobot killed off my firewall and antivirus and then I got 
blastered, and hit
by creepy crawly adware arriving in C:|\WINDOWS.  A 120 Meg patch from
microsoft 'fixed' the holes and I was patched right up to Febuary. 
Unbelievable.
Hence I have personal files PGP'ed on floppies, not on hard disk in case ...

If anyone can help me I'll get them more than-a-beer in the Tavern.  
Nearly popped down
but tired and not good to go near beer when tired IMHO.
