An alternative is a continuous ink system for your inkjet. For example:

I've used one at work printing out A4 photos day after day. I must admit the 
setup is a right kluge and it is easy to get ink everywhere when you are 
priming the system, but once it is going you just fill the pots when they get 
low. Much cheaper running costs than cartridges.

One caveat. Although the printer I used worked brilliantly with SuSE 8.2, the 
ink manufacturer provided a colour definition file which was not compatible 
with the Gimp.
