Re: [edlug] RICHAIR wireless workshop

Hi Dougie,

Thanks for your response!

I have to be honest, I didn't actually write this text, it was put together by the people doing the workshop. They are an artists group composed of people from several different countries so I guess they can be excused for maybe being a little unfamiliar with what's happening here, but it's a fair enough criticism that you raise. I am also sure they would also be very pleased to hear more from groups like backnet.

And, yes, I am very interested in finding out more about what really is going in Scotland, which is partly why I organised the FOSS Cafe event on the Sunday which Bob Kerr will be talking at along with James Wallbank from the group Lowtech in Sheffield and Lawrence Liang from Bangalore. I brought these people together because I felt it would be good to hear 3 people talking from quite different perspectives about FOSS and related issues. It would be great if more people from EdLUG could make it through and join in the discussion.

But, obviously, I can also make it through to Edinburgh also, so if you can't make it this Sunday I look forward to meeting some other time soon. Maybe at a future EdLUG meeting?

best wishes,
Si.

Simon,

RICHAIR2030 calls for public participation in freenetwork movement -
its ideas of open distributed wireless network and its DIY and open
source application in hardware and software construct. Recalling early
days of freenetworkers' handmade antenna building session, we will take
the opportunity of the workshop get together to review the current
state of freenetwork movement. In this time of Telecom's expansion of
city hotspots and the accessibility of inexpensive consumer wifi
products, RICHAIR2030 calls for sustainable local and self-organized
network building - share and consume, be engaged, be involved.

Given you don't yet seem to have noticed the existence of the two (IMHO)
major community network project in Scotland, any review of the current
state of freenetwork movement here would seem to be off to a bad start.

While it's great to see you support the creation of networks built by
their users, is holding another antenna building session really the best
way to promote this idea?

I'm sure there are a number of people, including myself, who would be more
than interested in helping design a 'getting started with community
networking' type workshop to give people the opportunity see how easy it
is to integrate off the shelf components and software into a live
community network.

TAKE2030 is a Transmitenti media society that operates in Parallel Net
media scheme and shifts the social media mission into hypermedia
playing fields.

I wonder if this will mean something in 2030?
