Thanks for your replies.  Seems like I'm quite a minority.  I'll look into
the VPN and other suggestions, however - I'll probably try and set one up
sooner or later, the main disincentive is the apparent fiddlyness required
getting it to work through two NAT firewalls, one of which may not be very
VPN-aware (the other end to mine).  Seems like I need something with "Super
FreeS/WAN", which my new Mandrake 10 install may well support, but the other
end may with only a struggle (being populated by an aging RH 7.3 server,
various Windows machines, and a couple of recent Mandrake machines being
used for other purposes currently).  Plus the fact that I am the de-facto
Unix expert, and so would need to sort both ends.

Technically, what I'd really like to get working is some sort of handy,
cross-platform remote desktop sharing, with voice over IP, preferably
without the explicit need for a VPN.  This may take some effort, however.
