I'm pretty sure it wouldn't automatically ask you to set the region,
however the drive will likely default to region 0 and may well not
play region 2 (or whatever) commercial DVDs until you set a region.
The best alternative is to flash an unofficial region-free hacked
firmware - then no more troubles. They have the additional advantage
of allowing full writing speed on media not certified by Pioneer.

I've used firmware for my DVR-106D from there without any problems,
but can't vouch for the 107D firmware.
If you really insist on having a region-limited drive then you can use
regionset to set the region: http://linvdr.org/projects/regionset/
