Bad idea --- RAID is not good for backups. Backups are there for all
sorts of disaster recovery: a RAID1 filesystem won't help you recover
from "rm -rf", for example. A proper backup archive will.
And with DVD-RW disks supporting approx 1000 reuses of the media, at
4.7GB per disk, it's _really_ cheap compared to most backup
alternatives.
