Maestro debit cards do not offer much protection from anything other than
fraud. However, Visa debit cards offer the same fraud & dispute rights that you
have, legally, using your Visa or MasterCard credit card.

I'm pretty sure that these enhanced dispute and fraud rights are mandated by the Consumer Credit Act. It's only if your card agreement is governed by that Act that you have the rather more robust consumer protection that's offered by credit cards. Certainly, none of my Visa Debit cards fall into that category (and not all 'credit' cards do so, either - it's worth checking.)
