Re: [edlug] Gentoo
Sounds like a plan, it doesn't look like there is any problem
installing it on my 1Ghz PIII RH8 server and AthlonXP 2200+ FC1 desktop
and letting them cooperate with the Celeron to do the compiles. Should
speed things up nicely. According to distcc homepage you don't need to
have the same OS or anything installed which sounds good. I'll give it
a try.

Why not try using distcc instead of swapping out the hd, which may
throw up more errors than it's worth (different motherboards, chipsets
etc).
I've read cases where people use it for compiling applications for
_really_ slow machines like 486's, only using the 486 to serve files
to the other machines in the compiler farm.

Yeah, yeah, I know, very late to the party and all but I have to say
how impressed I am with Gentoo. I've been experimenting with an old
Celeron 500Mhz with 128MB trying various modern distros to see how
well they behave and frankly, they are all awful. I have tried
Fedora 3, SuSE 9.2 and MEPIS and they were all dog slow. So, I
thought I would give Gentoo a go and see how well it copes. Well, it
is really surprisingly fast. This is with the 2.6.10 kernel and I
have just finished compiling KDE 3.3.2 and it all works pretty
smoothly. The compile did take over 24 hours for kdebase mind you so
it is not for the faint heart. This is one reason I ended up going
for a stage3 i686 install rather than trying the stage1 install.
I'll give that a go next maybe via installing the drive in a faster
machine, do the install optimised for the Celeron and then put the
disc back into the old box.
Anyway, just thought I would say that it is really nice to be running
a modern distro on a machine that is now six years old. A bit more
RAM and it would probably be very servicable. Nice.
