Opera has done this for ages.

There is a Google search box that lives next to the Address line, but 
you can also type "g searchterm" (without the quotes) in the Address 
field to initiate a search on google, replace g with f to search within 
a page, z to search amazon, e for ebay, l for lycos etc.

I can't remember if these keywords are customisable by the user though.
