Stumbled across this page the other day

Contains some useful docs about mozilla. In particular
the custom keyword feature is really cool
http://www.mozilla.org/docs/end-user/keywords.html

I created a link to google with keyword 'goo' and can now
initiate google searches by typing goo search-term in the
address bar, seems to work for multple search terms but
haven't played with it that much.

Opera has done this for ages.

There is a Google search box that lives next to the Address line, but you can also type "g searchterm" (without the quotes) in the Address field to initiate a search on google, replace g with f to search within a page, z to search amazon, e for ebay, l for lycos etc.

I can't remember if these keywords are customisable by the user though.
