Anyway, I've had an afternoon of total frustration. Everything I try fails at some point. Even both my linux systems. cfdisk crashes and hangs driver on one and brasero hangs finalising on the other. Maybe next year will be better!

Still now having some success with avg rescue cd. Thanks Rab. Can't understand why avg don't give instructions for installing their kit from a linux box. Not much point in using the doze box if it needs rescued.

The best way to stop receiving requests like this is to deliver an invoice along with their repaired computer. You may never see that money, but you will never hear from them again. I've done that before, even to family.
