Hi Carl,

Thanks again for your help.  It transpires that the client I'm using  
(Apple Mail.app in Leopard) isn't happy with Dovecot, but a few Google  
searches brought this to light and I fixed it by upgrading to the  
latest release from Backports.  Sorted!
