For me on the other hand gdm is finally reaching the stage where it
works properly, delegating decisions to my configured system
defaults instead of insisting that if I don't want everything
Gnomified I must want to go via xsm and twm (or some such piece of
hard-coded rudeness). At last it's beginning to look halfway
debianised...

I already had that set to "none". I've never seen the need for an
x-session-manager layer between my x-display-manager and
x-window-manager.

The problem with Debian's volunteerism is that people who notice
this shortage of documentation tend to try to fix it themselves by
coming up with a half-baked Personal Guide To Debian, then leaving
that hidden somewhere on the web to rot when they discover how much
work is involved. Instead it should all go in the Debian Reference:
So bug "http://bugs.debian.org/debian-reference"!
