I do this whenever I want to watch tv whilst reviewing my emails.

My laptop is pentuim 450 with pcmcia 100MB card and a very long wire to my 
desktop machine. Works very well. I also have a P166 running Win98 and cygwin 
with which I can also connect to my desktop machine. That's not quite fast 
enough though.

The only problem I had was a propensity to inadvertantly shut-down the desktop 
machine rather than the laptop whenever I logged out of the GUI.
