Re: [edlug] Sluggish machine
I'd a similar experience a couple of weeks ago. I've no idea whether
the root cause was anything similar to yours. In fact I've no precise
idea what the root cause was in my case, but suspect it was something
to do with fonts and a new version of Qt, as a bit of blundering around
in the fontconfig area sorted things out.
The most helpful thing is probably to suggest places to look.
1. /var/log/.
Is something spewing out zigabytes of error messages? (It can happen.)
ls -lart, and tail -f a few of the most recent logs. Anything weird
or unusual there? dmesg.
2. ~./xsession-errors. AWOUT?
3. Tools like top, or other system monitors.
4. ls -lart /etc, and consider whether any of the files there changed
at or around the time the trouble started. Have a gander.
5. It sounds like your system is thrashing somehow. Have you got
enough swap space? Find out some way to monitor swapping.
6. Hard disk params disturbed somehow?

7. Find and read recent mailing list archives for this beast. Is there
some horrific recent bug? Some newer version of the driver?
