Back in the distant past, during the days of NT 3.5 a company produced a commercial X windows package to do exactly this. You could run any windows application remotely from an X windows session.


Microsofr were very impressed. They said they loved the idea.

They bought the company, promising to release an official MS version of the product to help improve interoperability with other systems.

That was in 1997.
