I'd not recommend running an X session as root -- too easy to run things
you didn't mean too...

It's possible to work around the problem by using sudo instead of su,
something I'd recommend doing even if you don't need to fix this
particular problem -- to my mind, sudo is a lot nicer than su.  If
you've got multiple users, it's a lot more flexible too :-).
