I don't understand, is this on Linux or OS X?  On Linux I normally use 
iwconfig to set the wireless network settings then good old dhcpcd to grab my 
TCP/IP settings.  Do Apple have airport utils for Linux?  Maybe you could 
post exactly what you are typing.
