But what gets me is this. Somehow, Windows, and all that Terminal Server crap, and then the whole Citrix Metaframe industry, have managed somehow to dominate a market that X just DOES. Just like that.

Yes this drives me bananas too.

Couple of other points:

Microsoft is so paranoid about anyone being able to obtain a desktop
without the MS tax being paid that there are a whole load of licensing
hoops to jump through before you deploy anything (ie more unnecessary
complication compared with X11).

If you dig around in the WINE development list you can find some old
discussion of, get this, porting WINE to Windows for the sole purpose of
using it (or at least its graphics component) to serve up windows apps
remotely over X11 to avoid the MS tax on clients. Nice idea, but I
don't think anything ever came of it.

Furthermore...

It infuriates me that so many people have made so much money - an entire industry - out of the failure to function properly, the inadequacy of design, or the structural weaknesses of MS. People are out there driving Very Expensive Cars and living in Very Big Houses simply as a virtue the whole anti-virus or IIS security holes thing. And when they talk, and they DO talk, they talk as if Computers == Microsoft. Now that blase ignorance does drive me bananas.

Don't get me started on the staggeringly jumped up numpties that swan around companies pontificating because they once ran regedit and changed a value, or installed IIS on Windows 2000...
