A slightly OT tangent here, and a bit of a rant...

I'll grant you, X is fairly complex. But then it's complex, because it it flexible and powerful. Yes, you need a bit of experience with it (and maybe a bit of assistance from time to time).

But what gets me is this. Somehow, Windows, and all that Terminal Server crap, and then the whole Citrix Metaframe industry, have managed somehow to dominate a market that X just DOES. Just like that. And in the corporate world of 'managed desktops', with the whole policy and package mentality, locked down desktops, roaming profiles etc is just such a natural stomping ground for X. By which I mean - in an operation with skilled admins, in which the whole look and feel and application availability is controlled centrally, KDE, or even one of the more rudimentary window managers does exactly all you need.

I suppose things get a bit more tricky and complex when you start talking about multiple departments, directory services, localised printing etc but again I suppose nothing's insurmountable with some courage and bit of inventiveness. One way to look at it is this - if some companies put as much effort into in-house development of their systems and their system admin as they do to in-house development of the applications that run on those systems... it's like - nobody 'expects' to buy a core business system off the shelf that does exactly what they need, so why do they expect to be able to buy off the shelf the rest of their IT setup?
