As the largest available space is 3.4G, I don't think I'll be able to
gzip my mp3's off the hard disk.

No point in gzipping mp3s, as they're already heavily compressed.


parted only does ext2 partitions, so that's not available to me.

Yes it is - ext3 is just ext2 with a journalling system tacked onto it. Unmount the drive/partition, use tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/hdwhatever then e2fsck the drive/partition, then edit your fstab to mount it ext2 not ext3, then remount. You can then use parted to your heart's content.


Any other suggestions?

buy a bigger hard drive? 120-160 gigs are in the 50-70 quid range on ebuyer at the moment.
