If you did Java as main lang then it must be equivalent of a year at 
least on-the-job experience for a non/self-taught programmer.   It's an 
angle you can sell anyway.  Most likely what they don't want is someone 
whose never used the language. Most employers only give their 
requirements as guidelines - it's all much more negotiable than maybe 
you realise.
