Well it definetly sounds like the power supply.
However if you dont have any waranty seals you may want to try checking
all electrical connections and reseating all components just to be sure
before you go through the hastles of a waranty claim.
If you are technicaly minded the most common cause of a power supply
failure is for the power supply to have badly soldered connections on the
circuit board either on the output wires or on any high heat components.
Quoting paul@xxx.xxx.xxx:
Can you tell me if you get a brief flash of the power led or the cpu fan
twiches slightly.
no, it's totally dead. the whistling actually occurs in standby modus
(i've got
the system usually totally switched off). when i switch it off again, the
frequency of the whistle becomes lower, like something is being
discharged. i
do strongly suspect now (after some googling) that it could be the
capacitors
(hopefully in the psu) which would also explain the dischraging noise when
switching off again. still i would like some confirmation. at the end of
the
day i still have warranty on it, it's just a faff having to send it back
to the
supplier especially when you don't quite know what the prob is.
cheers
